Woman in Roxbury Bus Shove Admits Sufficient Facts; Judge Imposes MBTA Ban and GPS Monitoring

Widely shared video of the push has fueled new scrutiny of MBTA safety.

Overview

  • Luz Pineda, 32, admitted to sufficient facts in Roxbury court, and the case was continued without a finding for two years, according to the district attorney’s office.
  • Conditions include three months of home confinement limited to medical appointments, GPS monitoring, a prohibition on using the MBTA, mandated anger management and mental health treatment, and no contact with the victim.
  • Prosecutors say Pineda shoved a 63-year-old woman off a crowded Route 28 bus on Sept. 8 after an argument near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Warren Street.
  • The victim suffered a concussion, a facial cut and ruptured blood vessels, and video shows her falling down the bus steps onto the sidewalk; witnesses say she remained on the ground about 10 minutes before an ambulance arrived.
  • Investigators relied on surveillance and cellphone video and tips to identify Pineda, and prosecutors say she tried to change her appearance after the shove; MBTA leadership publicly condemned the conduct.
