Woman in Her 70s Dies After Bee Swarm Attack in Co Mayo

A post-mortem will determine the cause of death.

  • The attack occurred around 5pm on Monday in the Ballycastle area as the woman tended multiple hives with her husband during honey collection.
  • She suffered multiple stings, received an emergency response that included the Rescue 118 Irish Coast Guard helicopter, and later died at Sligo University Hospital.
  • Several other people were badly stung while attempting to ward off the bees at the scene.
  • One person was treated at a hospital in Castlebar and was discharged a short time later.
  • Authorities plan a post-mortem and will prepare a file for the local coroner.
