Woman Drowns After Raft Flips on Franklin River as Group Is Winched to Safety

Police say the remote, rugged Franklin-Gordon wilderness made the rescue difficult.

Overview

  • The 49-year-old died after being caught in rapids when a raft overturned, despite CPR by fellow rafters.
  • The flip happened on day five of a planned 10-day expedition near Livingston Rivulet and the Coruscades rapid.
  • The remaining members of the 11-person party, including her husband, were uninjured and were winched out to Strahan on Friday.
  • Tasmania Police Search and Rescue, helicopter crews and wilderness paramedics carried out the retrieval in the remote national park.
  • Police said the group lost camping gear to the river, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
