Woman and Bangladeshi Accomplice Remanded in Kolkata Drug-Facilitated Robbery

With the suspect’s travel documents seized, police pursue a broader India–Bangladesh theft racket

Overview

  • On July 27, Sudip Bose reported being drugged with tea by Jia Singh in a Dum Dum Airport hotel room and waking to find his phone, cash and bag stolen.
  • Police traced Singh through hotel CCTV, her phone number and undercover calls posing as suitors, leading to her arrest on July 28.
  • During interrogation, Singh identified her partner, resulting in the August 1 arrest of Md. Mahmuddul Hasan near Dum Dum Junction.
  • Hasan, a Bangladeshi national from Rajshahi, had his passport and visa seized before the Barrackpore Court remanded him to police custody.
  • Authorities are investigating whether the pair operated a larger cross-border theft network channeling stolen items to Bangladesh via matrimonial and e-commerce platforms.
