Wolf Supermoon Marks First Full Moon of 2026 With Global Views

The display closed a four-month supermoon sequence.

Overview

  • Royal Observatory Greenwich said the Moon reached full phase at about 10:00–10:03 GMT on January 3.
  • Pakistan’s SUPARCO reported the Moon near perigee at roughly 362,312 km with illumination around 99.8%, appearing about 6–7% larger than a typical full moon.
  • Skywatchers shared striking images from the UK, India, Pakistan, the United States, Mexico and Singapore as the Wolf Moon rose and set worldwide.
  • The UK Met Office forecast largely clear conditions, making the supermoon visible for most people despite the cold.
  • Astronomers noted the bright Moon would mute fainter Quadrantid meteors, and officials said the next supermoon is expected in November 2026.
