Wohngeld 2026: Payment Dates Confirmed, Rules Clarified

The housing benefit now covers about 1.2 million households with transfers made in advance on the last banking day each month.

Overview

  • February 2026 payments are due Friday, 30 January 2026, under §26 WoGG, with all 2026 payouts scheduled for the last banking day of the preceding month.
  • Eligibility and award amounts are calculated individually based on household size, total income, rent or owner costs and local rent level, with the 2025 indexation averaging about +15% and the next adjustment expected in 2027.
  • Child benefit, child supplement and education benefits do not count as income for Wohngeld, while trainees or students with a BAB or BAföG entitlement are generally excluded under §20 WoGG.
  • Income deductions include statutory allowances such as €1,800 per year for certain severe disabilities, a pensioner allowance for at least 33 years of qualifying periods (§17a WoGG), plus amounts for single parents and working under‑25s.
  • Wohngeld is typically paid to recipients but may be directed to landlords or care providers with consent or in limited cases like rent arrears, and care‑home residents are assessed using the local Mietstufe cap rather than actual rent with facility confirmation commonly required.
