WMO Says 2025 Is Likely to Rank as the Second or Third Hottest Year on Record

The UN weather agency warns a temporary overshoot of the 1.5°C goal is now likely.

Overview

  • Provisional data released ahead of COP30 in Belém show the decade-long streak of exceptional global heat extending into 2025.
  • Atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations rose by a record 2.3%, with the largest share of the increase attributed to India, followed by China, Russia and Indonesia.
  • Measured temperatures through the end of August 2025 were about 1.42°C above the preindustrial average.
  • WMO chief Celeste Saulo says science indicates temperatures could be brought back toward roughly 1.5°C by century’s end with rapid mitigation.
  • The WMO reports progress on early-warning systems, rising from 56 countries in 2015 to 119 today, and calls for closing remaining coverage gaps.
