Witnesses Say Audi Accelerated Before Fatal Strike in Brisbane Road-Rage Murder Trial

Witness accounts of the Audi accelerating toward Troy Vandenberg now frame the jury's question of intent alongside CCTV.

Overview

  • Umar Hussein Alkhalifa Al Enizi has pleaded not guilty to murdering Troy Edward Vandenberg, who died metres from his Browns Plains home in 2021.
  • Truck drivers testified the white Audi "sped up," "swerved violently" and struck Vandenberg before driving off, with one initially mistaking the airborne body for debris.
  • Another motorist told the court the car accelerated, cut in front of her by a hair's breadth, and hit Vandenberg as he appeared to prepare to throw an object.
  • Prosecutors argue Al Enizi deliberately drove at Vandenberg intending to cause at least grievous harm, while the defence says he swerved in a split-second panic after a hammer was thrown at his windscreen.
  • Jurors are being shown CCTV and hearing from multiple eyewitnesses as the trial continues before Acting Justice Peter Applegarth, with proceedings expected to run about a week.
