Withernsea Sea Tragedy: Two Dead as Coastguard Ends Search for Missing Person

Hazardous surf with freezing conditions hampered lifeboat launches, officials said.

Overview

  • HM Coastguard stood down its shoreline search late this afternoon after resuming at first light, leaving one person unaccounted for off Withernsea.
  • Humberside Police said a 67-year-old man was recovered unconscious on Friday and died shortly after, and a second body was recovered later that night with both deaths not treated as suspicious.
  • The response involved a search-and-rescue helicopter, a fixed‑wing aircraft, Coastguard Rescue Teams, RNLI lifeboats from Withernsea and Bridlington, Hornsea Inshore Rescue, police, fire and ambulance crews.
  • Severe conditions, including three‑metre waves, snow and ice, repeatedly hindered operations and prevented at least one inshore lifeboat from launching.
  • Eyewitnesses reported that a teenage girl was washed into the sea and that bystanders entered the water to try to help as authorities urged the public to avoid the area.
