Withernsea Sea Search Stood Down After Two Deaths, One Person Still Missing

Treacherous conditions forced officials to halt shoreline searches.

Overview

  • HM Coastguard ended an extensive operation on Saturday afternoon after recovering two bodies, including a 67-year-old man who was pulled from the water and died shortly after.
  • One person remains unaccounted for following reports on Friday of a number of people in difficulty near Central Promenade, with overnight searches paused at 12:30 a.m. and resumed at first light.
  • Authorities said the circumstances of both confirmed deaths are not believed to be suspicious and urged the public to avoid the area during post-incident activity.
  • The multi-agency response deployed Coastguard helicopters and a fixed‑wing aircraft, RNLI lifeboats, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Withernsea, Hornsea and Hull, Humberside Police, Humberside Fire & Rescue and Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
  • Eyewitnesses reported a teenage girl was swept into rough seas, prompting attempts by bystanders to help, as teams battled freezing temperatures, snow and three‑metre waves that hindered lifeboat launches.
