With Shelters Full, Patients Sleep Outside Delhi Hospitals as City Plans More Tents

Authorities plan 200–250 waterproof tents near hospital campuses following reports of overcrowding.

Overview

  • A nonprofit count found about 7,882 people sleeping outside major facilities including AIIMS, Safdarjung, Ram Manohar Lohia and Lady Hardinge.
  • The city reported 197 operational shelters housing 7,092 people, and DUSIB has asked AIIMS for permission to set up makeshift tents on its campus.
  • A Hindustan Times spot check of nine shelters found only two broadly met prescribed norms, with frequent overcrowding, unusable toilets and no hot water.
  • AIIMS cited 694 beds at Vishram Sadan and 250 at the Ashray camp, yet notices indicated the dormitories were full.
  • Delhi recorded a low of 4.2°C with a yellow alert, dense fog and very poor to severe air quality, heightening health risks for those staying outdoors.
