Wisconsin Unveils ‘Blackout’ and ‘Retro Butter’ License Plates, Sales Start Early January 2026

The $15 issuance fee plus a $25 yearly surcharge is projected to generate more than $25 million for the transportation fund in the first three years.

Overview

  • WisDOT introduced a modern all-black Blackout plate with white characters and a Retro Butter design inspired by 1970s Wisconsin plates.
  • Plates will be available online, at most DMVs, through participating dealers, and via third-party vendors that stock Wisconsin plates.
  • Serial numbering will start at ZAA 1001 for Blackout plates and YAA 1001 for Retro Butter plates.
  • WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman described the Blackout look as a simple, clean option that has proven popular in neighboring states.
  • Boardman said the team focused on the right shade of yellow for Retro Butter and noted she plans to order one.
