Wisconsin DOJ Opens Probe Into Superior Traffic-Stop Shooting That Wounded Officer

State investigators are leading an independent review following the driver’s arrest after a crash.

Overview

  • Superior police responded to a reported domestic dispute and conducted a traffic stop around 2:44 a.m. near Tower Avenue and North 37th Street.
  • Police say the driver exited the vehicle and shot a Superior officer, prompting the officer and a nearby officer to return fire and strike the driver.
  • The wounded officer received medical care at a hospital and was later released, and no other officers were injured.
  • The driver fled by car, crashed into a school building, was apprehended at about 7:01 a.m., received treatment, and was later booked into the Douglas County Jail.
  • Both involved officers wore body cameras and are on administrative leave, and the Wisconsin DOJ Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the case with assistance from a DCI Crime Response Specialist, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and regional agencies.
