Overview
- The first phase of the roll-out began on Monday, July 6, and covers about one third of Wirral households with further phases due the weeks beginning July 27 and August 17.
- Wirral Council and contractor Biffa have delivered an outside caddy, a smaller kitchen caddy, starter liners and information to households ahead of each area’s start date.
- Collections are scheduled to take place on the same day as existing grey and green bin services so residents keep their current bin day while adding a weekly food-waste pick-up.
- Council leaders say the scheme will stop moisture-rich food waste going to landfill or incineration and instead convert it into renewable outputs such as biogas fuel and bio-fertiliser.
- The change is the borough’s biggest revision to household waste services since 2005 and aligns Wirral with the national Simpler Recycling programme while asking residents to adopt a new weekly routine.
