Winter Fuel Payments Start Landing as HMRC Sets Clawback for Higher-Income Pensioners

Payments will be reclaimed from recipients with annual incomes above £35,000, often through automatic PAYE deductions.

Overview

  • Up to £300 began arriving from Saturday, 1 November, with most credits expected through November and December.
  • All over-65s are being paid initially, but around four million above the new income threshold will have the money recovered later.
  • Eligibility this winter covers those born on or before 22 September 1959, with typical awards of £200 or £300 depending on age.
  • Pensioners who do not receive a letter or payment by 28 January 2026 should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre on 0800 731 0160.
  • Standard disqualifiers include living outside England and Wales during the qualifying period, being hospitalised or incarcerated for 15–21 September 2025, or having visa conditions that bar public funds.
