Assistant Coach Scott Arniel, who has had previous stints as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets and assistant roles with the Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, and Washington Capitals, has been named the interim head coach in Bowness's absence.
Bowness, who is in his second season with the Jets, led the team to a 46-33-3 record in his first year, which resulted in a playoff run where they were defeated by the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Vegas Golden Knights.
Arniel had an 11-season playing career in the NHL, including over four seasons with the Jets, and was a head coach of the Blue Jackets until being fired midway through the 2011-12 season, having a record of 45-60-18.
