Winds Drive New Northwest Spain Wildfires as Casaio Tops 500 Hectares, Castromil Eases

Emergency crews face a stretched, multi-front fight across Galicia, Castilla y León, Asturias, Navarra.

Overview

  • Strong gusts and low humidity are complicating suppression of the Carballeda de Valdeorras fire in Casaio (Ourense), which remains active with provisional estimates above 500 hectares and extensive ground and aerial resources deployed, including BRIF teams.
  • The Castromil blaze on the ZamoraOurense line, which triggered an IGR level 2 alert and a confinement on Saturday, was downgraded to level 1 after favorable overnight progress, with residents deconfined and aerial operations resuming.
  • The Garcibuey fire in Salamanca reached IGR level 1 with heavy smoke and road closures on Saturday, then was brought under control and lowered to level 0 by late night, according to the regional service.
  • Asturias reported reactivations in Somiedo, Aller and Ponga, where ground crews and residents tackled multiple fronts as early high winds limited helicopter use, with local authorities noting gusts near 50 km/h on the cordillera.
  • Authorities continue parallel measures beyond firefighting, including a Guardia Civil judicial referral over a July wildfire in Atarfe (Granada) and a Xunta plan to drop 34,000 kg of straw and grain to support wildlife in burned areas of Ourense.
