Windows 11 Update Crashes Linked to RGB Peripheral Kernel Drivers

Microsoft attributes game freezes and EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION blue screens to kernel-mode drivers installed by RGB lighting software and has published a registry-based temporary disable as it investigates.

Overview

  • Users began reporting game freezes, crashes and EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION blue screens after installing the August Windows 11 update KB5121003, with multiplayer titles such as Arc Raiders, The Finals and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls most often cited.
  • Microsoft says the problem is tied to peripherals or internal components with RGB lighting that install low-level drivers with names similar to inpoutx64, and it has posted guidance to disable that driver in the registry as a temporary fix.
  • Kernel-mode drivers run at Ring 0, so if a driver like inpoutx64 is blocked or terminated while in use the system can hit an unrecoverable fault and trigger a blue screen, which explains the severity of the crashes.
  • Third-party fixes and vendor notes from game developers have circulated that remove or stop the inpoutx64 service, but those steps will likely break RGB lighting control and require care when editing the registry or removing drivers.
  • Microsoft is actively investigating root causes including possible interactions with anti-cheat or tightened kernel validation and asks affected users to submit Feedback Hub reports while it prepares a permanent update.
