Windows 11 Security Patch Disrupts Wi-Fi Connectivity

Users with Qualcomm 802.11r Wi-Fi adapters are particularly affected, with institutions advising to uninstall the problematic update.

  • A recent Windows 11 security patch, KB5033375, has caused Wi-Fi connectivity issues for some users, particularly those with Qualcomm 802.11r 'Fast Roaming' Wi-Fi adapters.
  • The issue has been reported by multiple users and institutions, including Brunel University and the University of New Haven, which have advised affected users to uninstall the problematic update.
  • The 802.11r standard, which is affected by this issue, allows users to move between access points while maintaining continuous wireless connectivity, making it particularly useful in environments with multiple access points such as offices, factories, and college campuses.
  • Microsoft has not yet formally acknowledged the issue, but it is reportedly aware of the problem.
  • This is not the first time a Windows update has caused connectivity issues. In 2021, an error caused some devices to crash when attempting to access a Wi-Fi network secured with WPA3, and Wi-Fi hotspots were broken by another update in 2022.
