Windows 11 Enables Native Passkey Managers, Starting With 1Password

The update moves passkey control into Windows to enable cross‑app use and broader syncing.

Overview

  • Microsoft made a new passkey plugin API generally available in the November 2025 security update, with 1Password as the first third‑party integration and Bitwarden support in beta.
  • Microsoft Password Manager from Edge is now integrated as a Windows plugin so passkeys can be used across browsers and apps and synced between Windows devices when signed into Edge with the same account.
  • Users can set a third‑party app as the system passkey manager in Settings > Accounts > Passkeys > Advanced options, with Windows Hello handling local authentication.
  • Edge has begun rolling out passkey saving and syncing on Windows for version 142 and later, with availability targeted for iOS by year‑end and Android and macOS to follow; Microsoft has not provided a Linux timetable.
  • Microsoft says operations and syncing are protected by Windows Hello, a cloud enclave with Azure Managed HSMs, Azure Confidential Compute for sensitive actions, and tamper‑proof recovery via Azure Confidential Ledger.
