Windows 10 Support Ends Today as Microsoft Activates One-Year ESU Lifeline

A temporary update program offers critical patches through October 2026 for users stuck on older hardware.

Overview

  • Microsoft has issued its final regular Windows 10 update and will no longer provide free security, feature or technical support.
  • Users can enroll in Extended Security Updates from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, choosing a free option by backing up settings with a Microsoft account or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or paying about $30, with an EEA route that does not require cloud backup and requires periodic sign-in.
  • Hundreds of millions of PCs still run Windows 10, and reports estimate roughly 200 million cannot meet Windows 11’s hardware requirements such as TPM 2.0 and newer CPUs.
  • Security experts from Avast, ESET and CyberArk warn of heightened risk from unpatched flaws, ransomware and scams, urging caution with pop‑ups, emails and unsolicited calls.
  • Immediate guidance includes upgrading to Windows 11 if eligible, enrolling in ESU now, backing up important data, and considering alternatives such as Linux or ChromeOS Flex or moving to new or refurbished hardware before ESU ends on October 13, 2026.
