Windows 10 Rebounds as Windows 11 Loses Share in August

Windows 10 nears its October 14, 2025 support cutoff, with a one-year ESU option influencing upgrade plans.

Overview

  • Statcounter’s August 2025 data show Windows 11 at 49.08% of global Windows share and Windows 10 at 45.53%, down from 53.51% for Windows 11 in July and up from 42.88% for Windows 10.
  • In Germany, Windows 10 expanded its lead to 58.59% in August as Windows 11 fell to 38.39%, compared with 56.64% and 41.03% respectively in July.
  • PC-WELT reports the global swing was driven largely by declines for Windows 11 in Asia, while cautioning that a data evaluation issue could also be a factor.
  • Microsoft’s official support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025, and consumers can extend security updates for 12 months through the ESU program, including free enrollment routes via a Windows selection menu, Windows Backup/OneDrive sync, or 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
  • An analysis cited from Nextthink estimates U.S. organizations could face up to $7.3 billion in first-year ESU costs at about $61 per device, and it reports higher instability on Windows 11 versus Windows 10 with more crashes (1.2% vs 0.6%) and hard resets (9.9% vs 8.5%).
