Overview
- Edge will no longer prompt users to become the default browser unless it’s opened by the user, with the update rolling out from May 29 in Insider Beta and arriving in retail builds this month.
- Windows Search will redirect web results to the user’s chosen default browser and support multiple web search providers that can be reordered in settings.
- Default browser associations now cover additional link types (ftp and read) and file formats including .mht, .mhtml, .shtml, .svg, .xht, .xhtml, .xml and .pdf, and the selected browser will be pinned to the taskbar by default.
- The Microsoft Store can be uninstalled like any other app in the European Economic Area, with apps installed through the Store continuing to receive updates and the option to reinstall coming later this year.
- All changes are being rolled out to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, with full availability for mainstream Windows 10 and 11 users expected by July 2025.
