Wind Shift Raises Threat From Out-of-Control Chance Harbour Wildfire

Evacuation advisories are in effect for communities near the 1,200-hectare blaze

The Chance Harbour fire continues to burn July 16 and has reportedly destroyed most of the cabins in Puddin' Cove.
 Two new fires broke out in Labrador overnight, bringing the total number of active fires in NL to seven on July 16.

Overview

  • The fire has burned roughly 1,200 hectares since igniting on July 14 and destroyed most cabins in Puddin’ Cove.
  • Three water bombers, a bird dog aircraft, helicopters, an incident management team and ground crews are engaged in suppression efforts.
  • Forecasted north-northwest winds risk pushing smoke and flames toward the communities of Jamestown and Winter Brook.
  • While no mandatory evacuations have been issued for Jamestown and Winter Brook, residents along Chance Harbour Resource Road have been advised to leave and stay alert.
  • Provincial officials have suspended forest harvesting permits in extreme fire-weather zones and maintain a provincewide fire ban under a Level 1 emergency operations centre activation.
