Wind-Powered Neoliner Origin Calls at Marseille Ahead of First Transatlantic Service

Backed by CMA CGM with a 37% stake, the 136‑meter ro‑ro aims to cut shipping emissions by up to 80%.

Overview

  • The vessel made an exceptional port call on 6 October at the foot of CMA CGM’s tower in Marseille following successful sea trials that included loading 300 cars in Bastia.
  • Key specifications include two self-supporting carbon masts about 75–76 meters tall, roughly 3,000 m² of rigid sails, and computer-controlled automation that raises or lowers the sails in about 2 minutes 30.
  • Commercial operations are scheduled to start on 16 October from Saint‑Nazaire with a rotation to Saint‑Pierre‑et‑Miquelon, Baltimore, and Halifax, targeting a monthly service at around 11 knots.
  • The ship can carry about 5,300 tonnes of cargo in ro‑ro and container configurations, with eight French shippers already committed, including Renault, Manitou, Hennessy and others.
  • Project leaders target 90–95% sail propulsion with engines used mainly for port maneuvers, with the company claiming up to an 80% cut in greenhouse‑gas emissions compared with conventional ships.
