Wind-Driven Fire Destroys Las Cruces Double-Wide After Hidden Roof Hot Spots Reignite

Investigators are determining the cause following the total-loss assessment.

Overview

  • Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 3:15 p.m. Friday to the 2400 block of Sonrisa Loop in Las Cruces.
  • Crews found flames on the front porch and front room, and wind drove the blaze through the home, collapsing sections of the floor.
  • Live electrical arcing at the front of the home forced an exterior attack until utilities controlled the hazard.
  • Smoldering trapped between an original shingle roof and a metal overlay caused a re-ignition around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, which crews contained by about 9 a.m. before monitoring the site.
  • Two residents were displaced and received Red Cross assistance, and LCFD thanked El Paso Electric for a rapid response as investigators work to establish cause and dollar losses.
