Wilmington Police Therapy Dog Zena Killed in Tewksbury Head-On Crash

First responders used Nero’s Law to rush the injured dog to a veterinary hospital.

  • The handler, clinician Samantha Cavanaugh, and the other driver were transported by ambulance to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • Zena was taken by ambulance to Bulger Animal Hospital in Lawrence under Nero’s Law and later died at the hospital.
  • Police said the Mazda driver, a 26-year-old Westminster woman, will be summonsed for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked-lanes violation.
  • Zena, a 3-year-old Bernedoodle who joined the department in 2022, served on the Health & Recovery Unit and frequently visited schools, senior centers, and community events.
