- Tewksbury police say a Mazda 3 allegedly crossed the double yellow on Whipple Road and struck the Toyota Camry carrying Zena and her handler head-on.
- The handler, clinician Samantha Cavanaugh, and the other driver were transported by ambulance to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
- Zena was taken by ambulance to Bulger Animal Hospital in Lawrence under Nero’s Law and later died at the hospital.
- Police said the Mazda driver, a 26-year-old Westminster woman, will be summonsed for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked-lanes violation.
- Zena, a 3-year-old Bernedoodle who joined the department in 2022, served on the Health & Recovery Unit and frequently visited schools, senior centers, and community events.
