Overview

  • The Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife cleared 32 defence and infrastructure proposals across Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Ladakh and Sikkim, covering roads, tunnels, helipads and military facilities.
  • The committee approved diversion of 310 hectares from Namdapha Tiger Reserve for the Arunachal Frontier Highway, which will involve the felling of about 155,000 trees.
  • A four-lane tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra linking Gohpur and Numaligarh was approved pending scientific studies on soil stability, groundwater flow, sediment dynamics and seismic vulnerability.
  • All approvals require the Wildlife Institute of India to conduct site-specific impact studies and develop robust mitigation plans, including tailored animal passage structures and human-wildlife conflict measures.
  • User agencies must restrict work to daylight hours, submit annual compliance certificates to state wildlife wardens and fund ongoing mitigation and monitoring efforts.
