Wildfire Near Chipman Expands to 650 Hectares as Fredericton Logs New Murder Charge

Emergency services juggled wildfire response alongside a homicide investigation during a season with far more fires than last year.

Friends and family of Luc Bourgeois were at the official launch of the Sentry Regional Marine Search and Rescue over the weekend in Shediac. The organization was sparked by the search for Bourgeois in July when he went missing while kayaking.
Wayne Richard MacLaggan of Priestman Street, didn't appear before provincial court in Fredericton on drug trafficking charges and a warrant has been issued.

  • Authorities say the blaze is burning in remote, boggy terrain with no homes or camps threatened, so no evacuations have been ordered, and water bombers are being used to help contain it.
  • This wildfire season has recorded 385 fires burning 2,989.3 hectares, compared with 252 fires and 196.2 hectares by the same time last year.
  • Fredericton police charged Aaron Jesse Rice, 45, with second-degree murder in the Sept. 7 death of Sonia Vivian Timbre, 42; he remains in custody and is due back in court on Oct. 24.
