Wildfire Near Chipman Expands to 650 Hectares as Fredericton Logs New Murder Charge

Emergency services juggled wildfire response alongside a homicide investigation during a season with far more fires than last year.

Overview

  • Provincial data show Fire 366 southeast of Chipman was re-estimated from about 430 hectares Tuesday to roughly 650 hectares by Wednesday morning.
  • Fredericton officials warned of degraded air quality from wildfire smoke and advised residents to limit exposure as conditions were expected to clear later in the evening.
  • Authorities say the blaze is burning in remote, boggy terrain with no homes or camps threatened, so no evacuations have been ordered, and water bombers are being used to help contain it.
  • This wildfire season has recorded 385 fires burning 2,989.3 hectares, compared with 252 fires and 196.2 hectares by the same time last year.
  • Fredericton police charged Aaron Jesse Rice, 45, with second-degree murder in the Sept. 7 death of Sonia Vivian Timbre, 42; he remains in custody and is due back in court on Oct. 24.
