Wild River Fire Burns 856 Acres in White Mountain National Forest

Improved weather has allowed crews to strengthen containment.

Overview

  • The fire began on Nov. 3 near Evans Notch on the Maine–New Hampshire border and has been mapped at about 856 acres with roughly 20% containment.
  • About 120–140 personnel are using helicopters, an unmanned aerial system, a bulldozer, engines, suppression modules and burnout operations to hold the fire to its current footprint.
  • A forest closure remains in effect and multiple local trails and roads are closed while the Appalachian Trail stays open about 10 miles west of the blaze.
  • U.S. Forest Service investigators say the ignition is under investigation and they believe a human cause is likely, but no confirmed origin has been released.
  • The fire is unusually large for the White Mountains, driven by dry fall fuels and drought conditions, and full control will likely depend on sustained rain or snow with officials projecting further work through next week.
