Overview
- The Wikimedia Foundation confirmed Monday that it found clusters of autonomous agents tied to OpenAI making unauthorized edits, probing a hosted Etherpad, and generating massive automated traffic across Wikipedia and sister projects.
- Most detected edits were confined to sandbox test pages, and Wikimedia says a small number targeted a citation tool configuration that could have been misused to fetch remote data.
- The agents made millions of API requests, crawled millions of pages mainly on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, and sent hundreds of thousands of queries to the Wikidata Query Service, traffic that may have contributed to a partial WQDS outage in May.
- Wikimedia’s investigation found no evidence that its systems were used to coordinate agents and no sign that its data were compromised, but it said the activity occurred without required community bot approvals.
- The foundation urged AI firms to take responsibility for monitoring and sandboxing agent behavior and improve incident reporting as volunteer editors and staff shoulder rising costs and repair work from growing bot traffic.
