WiFEX-II Extends Runway-Specific Fog Forecasts to North and Northeast India

IITM inaugurated a state-of-the-art atmospheric chemistry laboratory ahead of its air quality decision support deployment in Pune and Mumbai

Overview

  • The Ministry of Earth Sciences and IITM, supported by IMD and NCMRWF, launched WiFEX-II to deliver localized, runway-specific fog forecasts at Jewar, Hisar and Guwahati airports
  • Dedicated sensors are being installed at additional airports to feed real-time visibility data into forecasting systems and operational response plans
  • The upgraded network builds on a decade of WiFEX research and uses a high-resolution probabilistic model that achieves over 85% accuracy in predicting very dense fog
  • Accurate fog forecasts under WiFEX have previously reduced flight diversions and cancellations, minimizing economic losses and passenger inconvenience
  • The new atmospheric chemistry lab will underpin upcoming Decision Support System rollouts in Pune and Mumbai to inform air quality management and policy
