Overview
- The Ministry of Earth Sciences and IITM, supported by IMD and NCMRWF, launched WiFEX-II to deliver localized, runway-specific fog forecasts at Jewar, Hisar and Guwahati airports
- Dedicated sensors are being installed at additional airports to feed real-time visibility data into forecasting systems and operational response plans
- The upgraded network builds on a decade of WiFEX research and uses a high-resolution probabilistic model that achieves over 85% accuracy in predicting very dense fog
- Accurate fog forecasts under WiFEX have previously reduced flight diversions and cancellations, minimizing economic losses and passenger inconvenience
- The new atmospheric chemistry lab will underpin upcoming Decision Support System rollouts in Pune and Mumbai to inform air quality management and policy
