Widow of Cantal School Director to Sue Education Ministry Over Alleged Failures

She is seeking official victim recognition for Caroline Grandjean as the criminal case was closed, with an administrative review now underway.

Overview

  • Christine Paccoud told AFP she will file a complaint on Friday for “manquements” and expects to meet a delegation from the Education Ministry later this week.
  • She is also asking authorities to formally recognize her late wife as a victim of anti-LGBT harassment.
  • Caroline Grandjean, 42, died by suicide on September 1 after sustained abuse that included homophobic graffiti at the Moussages primary school.
  • Paccoud says she discovered 12 pages of typed notes in which Grandjean detailed incidents and reactions from local officials and the Education Nationale.
  • A criminal investigation into the inscriptions was closed in March 2025 for lack of new evidence, and the ministry has opened an administrative inquiry into the death.
