Widespread Instability Sends Storms, Flood Risk and a Sharp Cold Snap Across Brazil

Meteorological agencies warn frontal systems and low pressure will keep heavy rain, severe storms and flood risk in parts of the South and Centre‑West through midweek.

Overview

  • Inmet issued an orange-level danger warning for the west of Paraná, southwest São Paulo and much of Mato Grosso do Sul signaling a significant risk of strong storms.
  • A cold front that moved along the São Paulo coast produced an abrupt drop of about 10°C in the Baixada Santista and prompted Defesa Civil alerts for intense rain, lightning and strong winds.
  • Heavy rains in parts of the South and Centre‑West have raised the risk of alagamentos with Cuiabá and Campo Grande reporting particularly high rainfall and local warnings for flooding.
  • The North and large areas of the Northeast remain very hot with forecast highs in the high 30s in places such as Boa Vista and Teresina while some coastal northeastern cities stay largely dry and sunny.
  • Short-range forecasts show the pattern persisting into the week with regionally uneven easing beginning around Wednesday so residents should monitor updates from Inmet and local Defesa Civil offices.
