Why Oasis Chose Cromford Station for the ‘Some Might Say’ Cover

A long-closed Derbyshire stop, now Grade II listed, offered the deserted setting the cover concept required.

Overview

  • Cromford railway station in Derbyshire appears on the cover of Oasis’s first UK number one single, Some Might Say, featuring Noel and Liam Gallagher.
  • The station was closed in 1968 after the 1960s rail cuts, leaving an abandoned waiting room and platform that enabled an uninterrupted photoshoot.
  • Graphic designer Brian Cannon said the idea hinged on a disused station to reflect the lyric about standing at the station and being in need of education.
  • Cannon and photographer Michael Spencer Jones considered many locations before choosing Cromford for the shoot.
  • Today the station is a Grade II listed site owned by Network Rail and managed by East Midlands Railway, and visitors also explore nearby Cromford Mills founded by Sir Richard Arkwright.
