WHO Warns Global Cholera Is Worsening as Deaths Climb Across 31 Countries

The agency says the risk of further spread is very high without immediate scale-up of WASH, surveillance, vaccination, cross-border coordination.

Overview

  • WHO recorded 409,222 cholera cases and 4,738 deaths worldwide from January 1 to August 17, 2025.
  • Compared with the same period in 2024, reported cases fell about 20% while deaths rose about 46%.
  • Active outbreaks are present in 31 countries, with the Eastern Mediterranean Region reporting the most cases and the African Region the most deaths.
  • High case fatality rates are emerging in countries not recently affected, led by the Republic of Congo at 7.7% and Chad at 6.8%, with six countries above 1%.
  • WHO attributes the worsening outlook to conflict, displacement, natural disasters and climate-related flooding that disrupt water, sanitation and healthcare, and it urges stronger surveillance, case management, WASH measures and targeted vaccination.
