WHO Warns Cholera Outbreaks Worsen in 31 Countries as Global Deaths Climb

The agency reports a 46% rise in fatalities despite fewer cases, attributing the trend to conflict, displacement, floods, weak services.

Overview

  • WHO logged 409,222 cases and 4,738 deaths from January 1 to August 17, 2025, across 31 countries facing active outbreaks.
  • Compared with the same period in 2024, reported cases fell about 20% while deaths rose 46%, with the overall risk of further spread rated very high.
  • The Eastern Mediterranean Region recorded the most cases, and the African Region reported the most deaths, with rural and flood-affected communities flagged as especially vulnerable.
  • The Republic of Congo and Chad currently have the highest case fatality rates at 7.7% and 6.8%, and six countries exceed the 1% threshold.
  • WHO urges stronger surveillance and case management, rapid WASH scale-up, vaccination campaigns, and cross-border coordination; cholera is treatable with oral rehydration, with IV fluids and antibiotics needed for severe illness.
