WHO Sets 2026 Southern Hemisphere Trivalent Flu Vaccine Strains

The update provides platform-specific strain choices for manufacturers preparing 2026 shots.

Overview

  • For egg-based production, WHO recommends A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1)pdm09, A/Singapore/GP20238/2024 (H3N2) and B/Austria/1359417/2021 (B/Victoria).
  • For cell-culture, recombinant or nucleic-acid platforms, WHO recommends A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1)pdm09, A/Sydney/1359/2024 (H3N2) and B/Austria/1359417/2021 (B/Victoria).
  • The advisory committee reaffirmed that inclusion of a B/Yamagata antigen is no longer justified and that this fourth component will no longer be updated for quadrivalent vaccines.
  • WHO also updated candidate-virus guidance for zoonotic influenza to strengthen pandemic preparedness.
  • The recommendations, issued after a multi-day consultation, now guide regulators, manufacturers and public-health authorities in developing, producing and authorizing next season’s vaccines.
