Overview

  • Africa faces more disease outbreaks than any other region, driving the need for unified surveillance and rapid response systems.
  • Originally launched in 2023 across The Gambia, Mali, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa and Tunisia, the Health Security Partnership has now expanded to include Rwanda as its seventh member.
  • The collaborative surveillance model links health and security sectors to reduce biological risks and detect natural, accidental or deliberate public health threats.
  • Participating countries receive hands-on technical assistance for genomic surveillance, biorisk management and event- and indicator-based epidemic intelligence tailored to national priorities.
  • Canada’s Weapons Threat Reduction Program has supported the initiative since its launch and the United Kingdom will provide additional funding for the second phase.
