Overview
- The White House announced $2.4 billion in private-sector commitments, which were unveiled on Thursday, October 8, 2026, and include NVIDIA’s $1 billion, AMD’s $500 million and OpenAI’s $200 million.
- Anthropic pledged $150 million over three years to give researchers at more than 15 federal agencies access to its Claude models, Claude Code and API credits for tasks such as code assistance and model training.
- The Department of Energy also revealed 12 Phase II Genesis awards totaling $159 million as part of the DOE-led effort to route federal datasets and compute toward priority science areas.
- A new National Compute Grid and a reported $100 million in compute credits are meant to pool idle AI hardware so smaller labs can run experiments without buying specialized chips, but who gets access and which providers supply capacity remain unresolved.
- Genesis already moved large federal funding by mid-2026 with more than $5 billion across roughly 278 AI projects, and the new private pledges raise questions about concentration of resources, energy use, and whether the program will reach independent researchers.
