White House Secures $2.4 Billion in AI Commitments for Genesis Mission

Private donations of AI models and compute credits are being paired with new DOE grants to widen researcher access while rules for sharing and delivery remain unsettled.

Overview

  • The White House announced on Oct. 8 that 11 companies pledged $2.4 billion in AI tools and compute credits for the DOE‑led Genesis Mission, led by NVIDIA ($1 billion), AMD ($500 million) and OpenAI ($200 million).
  • Anthropic confirmed a $150 million pledge that offers researchers at more than 15 federal agencies access to its Claude models, Claude Code and API credits over a multi‑year period.
  • The Department of Energy announced $159 million in new Genesis awards for 12 Phase II projects and additional Phase I slots to fund AI work in fusion, quantum research and critical minerals.
  • A new coalition called National Compute said it will supply about $100 million in credits and is building a National Compute Grid with an initial target near 760 MW and plans to scale toward 2 GW by 2030, though its operational details are still developing.
  • The key next issues are how credits map to physical hardware, who gets priority access and when researchers—especially small labs and universities—will actually receive compute, with implications for equity, industry concentration and the speed of scientific results.
