White House Launches National Design Studio, Names Joe Gebbia First U.S. Chief Design Officer

The move targets a sprawling patchwork of federal interfaces with poor mobile scores.

Overview

  • An executive order signed Thursday created the temporary National Design Studio under the America by Design initiative, giving agencies a three‑year window and a July 4, 2026 deadline for initial results.
  • The White House says the effort will address nearly 26,000 government interfaces, with only 6% rated good on mobile and 45% not mobile‑friendly, and with fewer than 20% using U.S. Web Design System guidance.
  • Joe Gebbia, the Airbnb cofounder and Tesla board member who joined the Department of Government Efficiency earlier this year, will serve as the first U.S. chief design officer and lead the studio.
  • The studio is tasked with advising on usability, aesthetics, and standardized design, reducing duplicative design costs, and focusing on websites and physical sites that have major public impact.
  • Gebbia says his mandate is to deliver Apple Store–level ease of use on modern software to make interactions with government services simpler.
