Which? Warns of Fake 'Amazon' Postcards Pushing QR-Code Scam

Amazon confirms the mailers are not genuine, urging reports so accounts can be protected.

Overview

  • Professional-looking postcards offer a “free” item and instruct recipients to scan a QR code, buy the product, and email a private address to claim a refund.
  • Which? says scanning the code can route users to malicious sites that harvest personal or financial data or install malware on devices.
  • The mailers misuse Amazon branding and correct addresses and reference the defunct Early Reviewer Program, which ended in 2021.
  • Amazon states the postcards are not from the company and asks people to forward suspicious communications to reportascam@amazon.com.
  • Victims are advised to contact their bank immediately and report losses to Report Fraud in the UK or call 101 in Scotland, with warnings heightened as holiday shopping increases scam risk.
