Which? Finds Delivery Apps Charge About 20% More for Groceries, With Some Items Double

Retailers and delivery platforms cite rapid-fulfilment costs plus partner-set pricing.

Overview

  • In a snapshot of up to 50 items across four supermarkets on three apps, Which? found Morrisons baskets about 26% to 28% higher on apps and Asda ranging from roughly 19% to 31%.
  • Sainsbury’s Nectar members faced the steepest gaps, paying about 45% more via Uber Eats, 41% on Deliveroo and 40% on Just Eat than in-store with their loyalty discounts.
  • At Waitrose, Uber Eats averaged about a third more than shopping directly, with items such as Pampers nappies and Tilda microwave rice priced at double the in-store cost in the checks.
  • Tesco’s Whoosh also ran higher, with Clubcard users paying roughly 25% more on average than in Tesco stores and non‑members about 18% more.
  • Delivery charges were excluded from the analysis, while companies pointed to higher fulfilment costs, partner-set pricing, promotions, occasional price matching and moves to integrate loyalty benefits.
