WhatsApp Web Adds Native Audio and Video Calls

The change lets users place calls from a browser without installing software, with calls protected by end-to-end encryption.

Overview

  • WhatsApp announced on Tuesday that its Web version now supports native audio and video calls and the feature is being rolled out gradually to users.
  • The browser calls work for one-to-one and group conversations and include screen sharing, message reactions, a dedicated calls tab with history and favorites, and a waiting-room option for call links.
  • Meta said web calls include QuickHD to deliver high-definition video at call start plus noise suppression to reduce background sound for clearer voice audio.
  • Active calls can be transferred between mobile, desktop and Web without dropping the connection so a user can start on a phone and continue in the browser.
  • Availability may vary by browser, device permissions and the staged rollout, and the update brings Web parity with WhatsApp’s apps while keeping calls free and end-to-end encrypted.
