Overview
- WhatsApp began a gradual global rollout of native browser calling on Tuesday, July 28, bringing end-to-end encrypted one-on-one and group audio and video calls to WhatsApp Web.
- Browser calls include desktop-style tools such as screen sharing, in-call reactions, a dedicated Calls tab with full call history and favorites, and the ability to select the correct camera and microphone from the browser.
- A new Call Transfer feature lets users move an active call between phone, desktop and browser without disconnecting so a conversation started on mobile can continue on a larger screen.
- Hosts can enable a Waiting Room for calls created with a link so participants land in a lobby until approved, and call-quality upgrades QuickHD and Noise Suppression deliver HD video at call start and reduce background noise.
- WhatsApp says the features are free, have no time limits and are rolling out gradually so availability may vary by account, browser and linked devices, and the browser route helps people on shared or locked-down machines and Linux systems.
