WhatsApp to End Support for Older Android and iPhone Versions

Meta says the change is a security-driven modernization that will force users on unsupported phones to back up chats or move to newer devices.

Overview

  • WhatsApp will require Android 6.0 or later starting 8 September 2026 and iPhones to run iOS 15.5 or later beginning 30 November 2026.
  • When support ends, affected phones will stop getting app updates from Google Play or the App Store and may later show login failures, message delivery problems and instability.
  • Journalists have identified decade-old models likely affected, including early Samsung Galaxy and Motorola phones, several LG and Sony Xperia models, older Huawei devices, and iPhone 6 and earlier.
  • WhatsApp says it will notify users on impacted devices before service changes and recommends checking the device OS, installing any available system updates, and backing up chats to Google Drive or iCloud.
  • Meta frames the policy as an annual review to improve security, stability and to enable new features, a move that will hit users in places where phones are kept longer and may increase device replacement or backup activity.
