WhatsApp Tests One-Time Texts and Green-Dot Active Indicator

The trials would let users send text that vanishes after a single read while also adding a visible green-dot to signal when contacts are active.

Overview

  • Reporters have found the features in WhatsApp beta builds for Android and iOS, with sightings of Android betas including versions 2.26.24.5 and 2.26.19.9 during testing.
  • The one-time text option would delete a plain-text message after it is opened and is designed for sharing sensitive items like passwords or access codes.
  • WhatsApp's implementation is reported to block copying, forwarding, and screen captures or recordings while the one-time text is viewed to limit persistence and sharing.
  • The green-dot indicator will appear on profile photos to show when a contact is active and will honor existing privacy settings so users who hide their online status do not appear active.
  • Meta has not given a release date and plans a gradual rollout after further beta evaluation, and the change builds on WhatsApp's existing view-once tools that currently cover photos, videos and voice notes.
