Overview
- Starting September 1, 2025, WhatsApp will stop technical support and security updates for a defined list of legacy devices.
- The company says modern features such as multi-device syncing and advanced end-to-end encryption require more up-to-date operating systems.
- Affected phones can still send and receive messages using the installed app, but future updates will cease, increasing the risk of bugs and security vulnerabilities.
- Users are advised to back up chats and move to devices running at least Android 5.0, iOS 12, or KaiOS 2.5.0, with WhatsApp Web as a short-term option during migration.
- Models called out include Apple iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus and SE (1st gen); Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 Mini, Note 2, Core and Trend; Motorola Moto G and E (1st gen) and Droid Razr HD; LG Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini and L90; Huawei Ascend D2; Sony Xperia Z, SP, T and V; HTC One X, One X+, Desire 500 and 601.
