WhatsApp Sets Jan. 1, 2026 Cutoff for Older Phones

Meta says the move safeguards security by requiring at least Android 5.0, with some older iPhones also losing support.

Overview

  • Devices that cannot run Android 5.0 Lollipop or newer will stop working with the app starting on January 1, 2026.
  • The deprecation will occur in stages, first halting new features on affected phones before service is ultimately disabled.
  • Media examples of impacted Android models include Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 Mini and S5, Motorola Moto G and Moto E (1st gen), LG Optimus variants, Huawei Ascend models, and Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3.
  • Reports also cite iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, and 6 Plus as losing compatibility under the updated requirements.
  • WhatsApp advises users to back up chats to Google Drive, check for possible OS updates, or move to newer hardware, with in‑app alerts expected for those affected.
